The Giver - Cora Lewis-Patterson

The Giver is a classic. Written by Lois Lowry, this book follows a young boy named Jonas in a dystopian-style world where everyone acts the same. Although the citizens of his town still have their own interests, these interests are limited and non-expressive. The only thing that these interests influence is their career paths, which is assigned to each of them at the age of 12. Once it is Jonas' turn to be assigned a career, he is not given a normal job like he suspects. The council instead assigns him the role Receiver of Memory. This is one of, if not the most important jobs to be given. The Receiver of Memory is responsible for carrying all of the past’s memories- whether they be good or bad. Throughout the book, Jonas learns how to deal and adapt to this complex career and make multiple difficult decisions along the way. It is a complex and intense journey, and the reader gets to tag along to see how Jonas deals with it all.

Now, I am sure almost all of you have read this book before and already know what it is all about. The reason I wanted to write about this book is because of childhood nostalgia that I am filled with when I think of it. For a long, long time, whenever somebody would ask me what my favorite book was, I would always answer with The Giver. It was so interesting to me that a book dealing with regular people was set in such a different type of world. Imagining how our world would look if it was just like in The Giver always peaked my interest in the book even more. This book being my first dystopian-style read certainly made an impact on what genre of books I like.

My rating for The Giver would be 4/5 stars. I always have an exciting time reading it and it is still one of my favorite books to this day. The reason I am not giving it a 5/5 star rating is because I believe that rating goes out to another book in the series called Messenger. I highly recommend all of the other books in this series as well.

  3. I got the entire quartet a while ago, and while the first book is amazing the next three balance and add to it just perfectly, completing the series on a note that exceeds most books I've read. I'll possibly do a review of the entire series soon as well!
