Toy Box Leadership - review by Richi
Toy Box leadership is a book by Ron Hunter and Michael E. Waddell. It simplifies the principles of a leader to make it easier for people to understand in a creative way. It teaches building connections with people like building with Legos. It compares being open and flexible to change with play-doh. It shows the reader how to build a strategy like green army men. In total, the book demonstrates ten interpretations of leadership. The book uses examples and stories of successful people and leaders to help explain the principles better. The author then reciprocates his own explanation from the stories and toys by giving the main ideas and concepts as if he is giving advice while describing what he wants us to think; by making claims and giving us questions. After presenting the information, the author shows us how we can use the principles. He wants us to use them metaphorically, by implementing them into our lives. He wants us to share them, by teaching others about them and he wants us to put them away, by using them when we need to.
My opinion:
I’ve read many books about leadership. Most of them aren’t easy to read since it’s easy to forget the main points of the book. This book, however, made it easier to understand the principles of being a leader. It is a more creative way in my opinion, and it’s easy to memorize. I never played with a rocking horse before, and this is the first time I’ve heard of a lite-brite and weeble. That might cause some people to get confused, but I believe the book was meant to be directed for older readers since it was published in 2008. I think leadership is an important skill to learn, and this book is excellent for people who are starting, and people who need a refresher. Some of these principles are useful outside of leadership, like communication, ethics, relationships, etc. The book isn’t ideal for learning more advanced lessons, and other books will be more helpful. To the average person, this book will help a lot and I wished I read this sooner.
Great review! I can see how the main point of this blog is that this specific book teaches leadership in a new and revolutionary way. I like how you briefly discuss some of the methods that leadership is taught, and for me at least, it was intriguing. I agree with you when you say that leadership is an important skill to learn, and I will have an eye out for this book!
